Padded seats seemed to be kind of common in the 80s. I haven’t really seen them since.

Edit: wait that link is weird. They were like regular toilet seats that you could swing up or down to raise and lower. In that link it looks like they are (semi)permanently attached to the porcelain? The ones I’m talking about were not like that.

Oh wait. Right. Those were a different thing though. Those were like removable covers. I think they had like an elastic on the bottom, kind of like a fitted sheet. So you could remove and wash them.

The ones I’m thinking of were more like OP or the parent comment. It was like a vinyl, with some padding inside. So not machine washable, but you could wipe it down.

Still, one crack or tear in the vinyl and who knows what starts growing inside one of those padded seats? Maybe I’m being unreasonable, but even as a child of the 80s those seats always gave me the ick. (Of course, that’s not how I would have said it then.)

The master bath in my childhood home is carpeted, and when I was a child we also had those carpet-like removable lid covers with the elastic underneath.

just imagine the squish of accumulated liquids being forced out through tiny cracks every time you sit down on a covered sponge.
