Pretty nifty trick to declutter your gallery
Unfortunately Pixels will delete the file if you put it in one of the main media folders. Nasty little surprise if you want to use it to hide sensitive pics from Google Photos
Interesting piece on google photos, even if you dont use back up you require an internet connection to lock media in the locked folder.
I guess that’s what we get for wanting to keep data to ourselves. Can Russia and China just nuke the us already?
Would be nice if there was a way to be specific. Like all the music folders with album art that I don’t want to show in my gallery but still want shown in my media player. I was so hopeful for a moment there.
Still a cool find though!
Isn’t your gallery able to hide specific albums/folders? I would imagine that is a pretty standard and rational feature.
One of the downsides of the built in graphene gallery is limited functionality. I haven’t found that option. I agree though, it should be an included feature. I probably just need to setup a more limited storage space for it like the other person suggested.
Love your little profile shark btw. 🙂
You can always disable the default gallery and install another. Aves has been great for me ^^
Looking at the current Graphene Gallery repository the curent app is being replaced by a fork of ReFra.
GrapheneOS has Storage Scopes which allow you to define which folders an app can access. In this case, you’d give your media app access to that folder but not your gallery app. Pretty handy but it’s only on Pixels and one Motorola phone at the moment.
I’m running graphene. I guess I over permissioned the gallery though lol
You can use .anything, the “.” in front of the folder name is what hides it not the name itself.
File not folder. .nomedia file goes in the folder you don’t want scanned unless I am very much misunderstanding.
You can also make hidden folders and files by putting a period at the front of the name but that hides it from everything not just the media scanners.
Ah, thanks for the explination. The misunderstanding was on my end. I guess hiding the whole folder has always worked for me so I never questioned it.
…It is a hidden file (the leading dot conceals it in standard Android and Linux file listings) that informs the Android media scanner that the directory in which it is located does not hold multimedia files that should be displayed, such as images, videos, or audio.
.nomedia files are used to hide the contents of directories so that they are not visible to media-aware apps - for instance, the system gallery or a music player. Placing one inside a folder prevents those apps from indexing and displaying its media. Removing the .nomedia file causes the media scanner to re-index the directory on its next pass.

I believe you have wildly misunderstood the post. You’re talking about completely different stuff.
If I hide a file with “.” my media gallery does not index it nor does my music player so no, I’m not. I’ve done it since my first android and never had anything index a hidden folder.
But this post isn’t about hiding specific files, its about the
.nomediafile that hides all of the photos/videos in the folderMaybe, but hiding the folder does the same thing, as was my point. Maybe it didn’t get across but it doesn’t change it.
Again. You are talking about something different.
What if it’s a folder that cannot be renamed because an app needs the original name?
Your tip is useless in such cases.
And again. Is completely different.
Are you trolling? I’m beginning to suspect you must be.
Works for Kodi on linux too, so maybe other things as well. Handy.
