I recently started working at a gas station/convenience store combo and there’s a couple homeless people that use the forest behind it as their current living space.
Every so often one of the cashiers gets frantic about maybe seeing one of them pocket something. She almost sounds giddy about being allowed to kick them out.
I have yet to see them steal anything, and even if I did, no the fuck I did not.
I don’t understand why anyone would be happy about calling cops on homeless people.
For stealing shit the employee has absolutely no association or financial connection with. Let them steal, who gives a fuck
They find them scary because they’re unknown to them, so they want to create distance from them. And they might not think of cops as violence (they extremely are) and are just focused on the benefit to them (keep the scary people away). That, or they like inflicting violence through proxies (that is very anti-social behavior, so we can assume that’s unlikely, especially at a gas station (better suited to wall street, those types))
The actual cure to that fear is, of course, to talk to and treat those you fear like humans cause *gasp they are! That fixes your irrational fear and makes the world a better place for everyone. Plus, people are less likely to harass someone who’s been friendly to them (unless the aforementioned anti-social, but again, wall street or sales positions)
Big problem also is, that you never know the mental state of the person. But that would just make me even less likely to intervene
The real solution would be to give people easy access to the help they need. Be it housing, health care or both

What of the case of the shitty teenagers around here? Like I saw someone just walk out with chocolate. That ain’t food… like fuck corporations but also fuck shitty people? I don’t know where the balance is.
Bit situational. If they’re shoplifting from the bodega that’s a lot different then the Wal-Mart.
I mean the other things apply also to non food shoplifters.
It’s hard to keep track of which crimes to fashionably ignore.
- stealing from a neighbour?
- stealing from a neighbour’s workplace?
- …if that neighbour works at a store?
- stealing from a store-owner’s shed?
- …if it was food you were stealing?
- what if it was something you could SELL for food? Like an xBox?
- what if someone stole the thing you were selling for food instead of paying? That’s a dick move. But, there, YOU’RE the scumbag vendor now and that may be okay, but it may depend on who is starving more.
- what about robbing a store owner when you go over to pick up an auction in on fb marketplace?
- …if it’s from the office at work
- …and it’s food
There’s a lot of rules to exempted crime, but we should get it right so people all can agree who gets the xBox before the guns come out. We should all get electric fences now that all theft is “purge” rules.
Its only confusing if you are trying to muddy the water
The rule is simple:
Stealing from a huge corporation? Like Walmart, best buy, etc. go for it.
Stealing from a small business/mom and pop shop/individual? Don’t do it
Easy peasy
i think you’re lost.
There’s lots of those around here
Yup, I was having ribs with the dude. Couldn’t have been them.
I’ve seen someone trying to shoplift about 20L of olive oil.
