  • The breakdown of democracy is not a good thing

You could argue this is the opposite, the triumph of democracy over fascism. It’s definitely a triumph of the legal system over whims of a tyrant

    • Congestion charges were wanted locally, or at least by local officials. They got all their paperwork done, overcame objections, got final approval and got started. Now a tyrant comes in and tries to cancel in personal preference. Ignoring that is a triumph of at least the preferences of the local government over fascism imposed from outside
    • Final approval was in place and congestion tolls were being collected. Attempting to stop this out of personal preference, with no votes or requests, no evidence, no due process is not supposed to happen. Laws need stability and reason

  • I had all sort of dirt on my boss who was kissing ass to climb the corporate ladder

I had one where I had just spent like a year training my idiot boss on the systems, just for him to turn around and say I didn’t do anything, but during the exit interview he kept waving around a list of my shortcomings that was literally a blank page

That was the one where I was foolish enough to be willing to it in all sorts of crazy hours, I was willing to be the first one on, I was willing to be last one out, I was willing to also do his job of a daily status, but I finally drew a line at “and”. This was a startup where we all worked crazy hours - I felt I had to point out that I couldn’t physically do first in and last out: I’d get more sleep working overnight

It was closed down in 2018 because so few Americans used it

I was getting excited up until this point. It’s too late for my kids now but I wish we knew about this

Edit: oh, it was only there for a few years, and we were having a medical crisis at the time. We wouldn’t have been paying attention

Bank interest rates will never be a path to wealth. At most they help your money stay even with inflation, but usually not even that. This is a reliable low risk way to park money that might npbe needed on short notice, such as an emergency fund

investments might make you wealthy, over a very long time, assuming prudent choices. However usually risk is inversely proportional to reward: you can also lose a lot very fast, or you might only make middlemen wealthy. Investing is a huge topic area with all sorts of sometimes conflicting advice.

However looking historically there has never been a, was it decade, where the SP500 stock index lost money. The most reliable way for most people to raise their status might be:

    • start with your first job and put something aside
    • continue putting something aside for your working life
    • invest In an index fund of a Broad market stock index, such as SP500 or FTSE
    • leave it there, rain and shine. Timing doesn’t work but time does
    • retire a millionaire

  • it was a day long ordeal

Isn’t , or wasn’t, there an agency that was supposed to watch for voting rights? How isn’t this a violation of your voting rights by placing an unreasonable burden in your right?

I also had about 5 minute voting time, maybe 15 round trip from home and back. There’s nothing stopping every state from ensuring this, except for politicians who want to suppress votes or who don’t think they have to care about voters.

Out of curiosity, how are your voting places defined, or for what scale? I’ve always had them at every elementary school, which greatly limits how much of a line there can be, and you only need a dozen or so stations per

  • That’s all part of my reasoning, at least for myself.

I used to spend a lot for an excellent tv and sound system for the immersive experience. However over time I tend to choose options for convenience. The sound system stopped being used and no longer exists. I use the TV itself less and less.

This is the same pattern as for music. Over time I found connected speakers in every room more compelling than my good sound system, and stopped spending money on it.

I could argue a similar pattern for cable, for a landline, for CDs, for computer desks, for many things I’ve left behind.

Some of these similar patterns left behind are a trend, not just me

  • And if the women down the street is being abused by her husband, it’s in all of our best interest that she come in and be safe until the police get here

And if the kid down the block is playing the same sport as my kids, they’re welcome to our hand me downs

And if there’s a neighborhood bbq, I’ll be there, and bring something

Not one of these things impacts my ability to deal with my own shit but it helps other people and builds a healthy neighborhood where we can live in peace and security, and know they’ll be here to support us too

  • Does anyone still use a tv? What do you use it for?

As we’ve built up a plethora of small screens in the house, we almost never use the big screen anymore. I wonder if this is going the way of landlines, and cable - a huge expense that is no longer relevant.

With all the choices of media and activities, it’s not like we have a family activity of sitting to watch whatever dreck, on the broadcasters schedule. We’ll still probably be in the same room relaxing at the same time, but the kids will be gaming, the wife will be cackling at Instagram, and I’ll probably be doomscrolling. We all have screens that are more suited than the big screen, and the big screen would just interfere with someone else’s enjoyment

I suppose we did watch the Super Bowl together, but that may be it for the last few years. Is a big tv worthwhile for one event? Even when I’m home alone and want to watch something, I have a better suited small screen (heck, that bedroom tv hasn’t been turned on in years)

  • It’s not whether the girls father is at fault, read the article. She put a lot of effort into publicly defaming the company to try to get damages. While it seems like they should have had a better response, including sharing the evidence they had, there has to be a better way to get justice

she draped her damaged car with a banner proclaiming “Tesla brake failure” in front of the Tesla dealership in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, some 200 km (124 miles) from her home. She sat on the Tesla’s roof and blared her protest through a bullhorn: “Tesla Model 3 brakes failed,” she said. “A family of four almost died.” The next month, she parked her damaged car outside an auto show in Zhengzhou
