When I first read it in the eighties, it felt really radical. When I reread it recently, it felt rather tame. Guess we’ve all been desensitised in the past thirty years or so.

When I was a student, I wasn’t really motivated and didn’t have any idea what to do with my life. But then I worked as a window cleaner during the summer holidays and that gave me a very clear idea about what I didn’t want to do with my life.

We are all pushing the button every day. We are outsourcing or pollution to poorer countries where it poisons the population. We are buying things that have been produced under unsafe or downright dangerous conditions. Our consumption is often based on slave labour. The list goes on.

Whatever happens, I’ll never forget to charge my Wife Pro Max.

Hunger is a political problem, not a money problem. You can’t just say “here are X billion dollars, let’s end world hunger”. Having said that, the system that allows people like Musk to get that rich, is also the same system that creates hunger.

Cue lots of conservative hand-wringing and tone-policing.

Linux has always been more pragmatic and focused on getting stuff out that works now. BSD has always been a promise that might be better in theory but is of little practical use to most people.

Political protest is the only way to effect any kind of change. You can certainly argue, how effective some stickers on a gas pump can be. But I don’t think donating the money to compensate for the negligence of the government you’re protesting against will be more effective. One might even argue that’s counterproductive.

Because he’s not a billionaire. Duh.
