I too hate it when people in a place of oppression tell me in which ways they are being oppressed, and how I could help them stop being oppressed. It really makes me angry!!!
😔 foiled again
I feel like theres lesser of the ladder than the former. People like to be told what to think. I really dont understand it myself, but something about big brother telling you what to think is somehow comforting for some people. Ive seen the behavior from multiple family members, just parroting what their media source of choice is saying.
I don’t think a simple statement of “I see your concern, I’ll address it when I have time” is really that hard for one person to issue when the alternative is, as you’ve said, letting “a fucking clown show” fester on. It would’ve made my worries go away if the developer had said literally anything instead of radio silence for a year. Sure, no one is entitled to a developers time or attention. That developer is also not entitled to my trust or recommendation to others when a serious issue was swept under the rug for over a year. There’s no doing better when it comes to a matter of personal opinion on how a situation was handled.
I guess what I am not understanding is why you would self host if youre not doing it for privacy and security. Who cares where the information is if the info gets to where it needs to be? If the user doesnt set it up just how they want and all decisions are made by a 3rd party, why not just centralize the information? That 3rd party can still implement all the spyware, telemetry and backdoors they want to into the software so to the end consumer it makes literally no difference other than the fact that now instead of everything being in “the cloud” you have to spend $100+ on a box that does the same thing the cloud did.
While I see where you’re coming from, I feel that given the current economy (subscriptions & enshitification) what youre describing functionally can not happen without a major shift in consumer habits, or a whole shit ton of regulation. I love the idea of making Everything accessible, but there is always a catch 22 with these things. Your example for instance being Plex, dont they charge you to encode and stream your own media? Thats a bit ridiculous, and should be free. If you pay for software, it should be a one and done. I’m not subscribing to use features of the hardware Ive already purchased. To end though, I do understand where your coming from, and in an ideal world would agree with you. I dont think that ideal world is going to happen without some sort of insane turning point in consumer consciousness or a major gov. enforcing a new law.
Have you heard of YUNOHOST? Thats all I’ll ask I dont want to like waste your time if you have and you already have an opinion.
Took them over a year to say anything? I have since just gone back to burning single drives and honestly it’s fine. Ventoy was convenient but taking a year to respond to a genuine concern is crazy.
Can you elaborate on “Hassle-free self-hosting” & “and you’re wrong”
genuinely curious to see what your argument is here.
Turret3857@infosec.pubto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•"They just have to read the documentation"English1·3 days agoI mean it sounds like if you were going to encounter an issue in the live usb environment you would’ve then. I’m honestly a little stumped myself then. If you can run it off the USB, have verified your SSD and RAM are both physically functional with memtest and SMART tests, I can’t think of any other basic troubleshooting other than trying another distro like Fedora. Theres a possibility you might have some sort of hardware that either isnt supported or is failing in such a way that it doesnt affect windows? I have never seen such a thing but maybe its possible. If you want to DM 1:1 on like, Matrix or something to discuss more I’m open to that. If not I hope you find something that works out though.
There is no phrase clever enough to convince any american who doesnt already say they care about politics to say they care about politics. The people who say this only care about themselves, and will not change until it directly affects them. What we should be striving for is ensuring it affects them.
I wouldnt call destroying my body in exchange to live one more week getting “paid” as much as it is a sacrifice. The people buying lotto are just kinda Saying fuck it, if I’m going to die I might as well keep trying to see if I can hit a jackpot before then.
Turret3857@infosec.pubto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•"They just have to read the documentation"English1·3 days agoYup thats exactly what I meant. If you play with it on the USB for a while, do you notice any problems at all or is it only after install?
Turret3857@infosec.pubto People Twitter@sh.itjust.works•Everything wants me to pay rentEnglish2·4 days agoI know this is not a serious comment but I’m gonna reply as if it were I would argue that wages are not a subscription service, here’s why.
A subscription means the company is guaranteed money in exchange for providing a service. The customer can not and will not get that money back.
A worker who earns a wage can be very easily screwed out of money they were “guaranteed” but because their contract stipulates the worker turned in their shirt with a stain on it after quitting, they dont get their final paycheck. (actual clause at a job I had)

Turret3857@infosec.pubtoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•maybe sending dms across the fediverseEnglish4·5 days agoThat ToS definitely gives them the right to sell whatever data you provide to them though, at least in the US.
