I think endermen cannot teleport onto carpet. Unless the room is three blocks high.

There is no zombie nor spider close by, the environment seems intact. So the only possible confusion is this was the deed of a skeleton.
It could be an instance of “how do you do, fellow kids?”
Wanting to fit in but not knowing how to do it right.
