Are you implying that a lifestyle where you do the same thing everyday and never have to meet new people would attract autistic people? Crazy

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I get Scandinavian DNA, but where does Spanish DNA come from?English
6·8 days agoI think it’s funny that dog DNA tests are more accurate than for humans. That is because someone defined a breed and then started tracking that for years. Since these breeders have almost complete control over the mating behaviour of their dogs we can define a breed. Humans are not like that. We move and mate everywhere we want
Homeschooling feels like an act of hubris. The idea that you and your partner know the same or more about education than trainer professionals is crazy. Each teacher has at least a college degree, most have a master’s and they all go through yearly refreshers on how to best teach on top of their on the job experience. How can one (or two) people do more than that?
On top of that your child will be exposed in their home life to things you know and think are important to understand. School can show them things you know you don’t know as well as things you don’t know you don’t know. I want my daughter to know things I don’t know and to expand her worldview beyond mine. Homeschooling limits their knowledge that what I know. (Which is usually the point to shelter a child from scary ideas which is not doing them any favors).
Can homeschooling be okay? Sometimes but not often enough and most people who do it aren’t prepared or qualified to do it
Anyone who says they are self sufficient is lying to themselves. Communities of people can be but we all need each other
Just requested it from the library. Our composting in place garden has been producing a ton over three last year. We have lots of berries now and have a lot of functional plants in our urban yard. It’s mostly teas, medicinals and some cut flowers but we can get lots of use out of it. When you really try there is a lot of space to grow what you need even in a small space if you prioritize. I can’t feed myself but good supplemental for high value things
If you are interested I would recommend reading some books on permaculture. My first book was Gaias Garden which I loved. It talks about how to piecemeal increase your own sustainability starting in your own yard. It’s a great first step if this is what you want to do. Overall no one person / family / farm can stand all alone we are all interconnected
A porn instance is the perfect single topic instance. We need more of them

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Without getting in a fight. Why is it called coming out of the closest? Where did it begin? I mean why not a garagde or a bedroom or something? How did it become a reference to homosexuals?English

In my head the closet part involves someone jumping out of bed and hiding in the nearest place to hide. A closet.

Cooking @lemmy.world•[QUESTION] What is the best way to learn to cook and improve?English
5·26 days agoI am going to give you two book recommendations that I think should be done in this order: Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat and The Wok
Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat is great because it talks and about what is needed for all recipes (it’s title). It talks about food science and theory so you can understand techniques and understand what each thing in a recipe does. It does have generic recipes that you can modify as well “lessons” to walk through what you learned.
The Wok is similar but just about using a Wok. I love the wide variety of things you can make with the wok. It also gives you some sidebars about how to shop of ingredients, sauces and how to chop for the recipes. It also talks techniques with then example recipes. Read both and try them out
I would say something lunar based would be natural.
The harvest would depend on the plant. You can really harvest something most of the year
Weird calendar to season mismatch.
Isn’t nature wonderful and strange
