I always took the story as monarchist rather than fascist. Simba’s family is the ruling blood line, hence why the throne passes from Simba’s father to Scar to Simba. Kings and queens are standard fare in Disney’s animated movies. But I suppose fascist versus monarchist is a distinction without a difference here.
some of the embedded ideology is very disturbing. Some authors have argued that the movie implicitly supports fascism
The 1994 version, or the 2019 remake? The original had the “Be Prepared” musical sequence where the hyenas are goose-stepping for Scar, clearing framing them as akin to Nazis parading for Hitler. I have not seen the 2019 version to know what may have changed.
Community statistics are available from the Lemmy API. For example, this URL returns the info for this community: https://lemm.ee/api/v3/community?name=fedigrow
The community statistics are listed in the returned data under counts:
.
The API only returns current numbers, though. To create a time series you need to write a script to grab the community statistics on a regular basis and store the results.
Not sure about Lewis and Clark, but I have read that David Thompson did.
George Vancouver recorded beaches strewn with old human bones. Around the same time he wrote journal entries along the lines of, “Wow, look at all this rich, uninhabited land that would be ideal for settlements!” I don’t recall Ol’ George ever putting two and two together.
Didn’t know that. Thanks for the info.
Guns, Germs, and Steel covers that in a brief but eye-opening way. When Hernando de Soto’s crew first explored the Mississippi river in 1541 they wrote about all the people they found, but did not mention bison. A century later another set of Spanish explorers revisited the Mississippi and didn’t record much at all about people, but commented on how prolific the bison were.
Off the Rez for the win. I hear Spokane has a good place, too.
I wish I had a chance to try ʔálʔal Cafe before it closed last year.
I love that Gen Alpha won’t even get this reference because the movie came out 30 years before they were born.
For an OpenChristian community, you are welcome to take over [email protected]. The existing mod is long gone. Let me know if you want it.
I do not know of any instances focusing on religious communities, but I assume most general-purpose instances would be fine with you opening a religious community. If you search communities you will find lots of existing religious ones across several of the large instances, though they are generally not very active. If you find that the community you want already exists, but is dead, consider taking it over and bringing it back to life.
The impact of centuries of slavery, segregation, and unequal treatment doesn’t disappear quickly. Even if the root causes were completely resolved (and they are not), the consequences reverberate for a long time. We cannot forget that much of our life is a result of where we start, and it was the same for our parents, and their parents.
Georgia ain’t going to burn itself.
