7·16 hours agoNonsense. Until I see studies that prove such models of someone’s complex personality or behavior, I’m always gonna call bullshit on this stuff. Simulating someone based on only the outward symbols they produce does not construct a replica of that personality.

2·16 hours agoThe transition to USB-C has been pain. But I feel like we are past dongle town now.
Is not having an Ethernet jack really that bad? Is having an Ethernet adapter really that bad? Is Ethernet important enough to increase the thickness of laptops? Don’t people love docks anyway?
But yeah, the transition was rough. I’m glad they brought HDMI back. And that they have it on desktops too.

64·3 days agoThis guy. If they could have just kept on the path they built with the 900 and 1000 series. He coulda been the quirky leather jacket guy he wants to be.
But in light of the path they took with gamers and then the way they handled crypto, and now the whole AI bubble. He’s insufferable. He sees himself as heralding in a new age for humanity. And his head has gotten so huge.

1·3 days agoIt’s difficult to know of any random person is differentiating between Intel Macs or not when they say Apple silicon these days. This is the first I’ve heard of this.
I experience SMB slowness over the internet, but not locally, on my Intel and ARM Macs. (I’m forced to use smb over the internet via VPN for work.)
I’m gonna try these commands sometime this week to see if it improves things.

Technology@lemmy.world•YouTube Premium is getting pricierEnglish
2·8 days agoYouTube is the new cable, and it will take monumental effort to dethrone it. Hosting video at this scale is expensive. And people loathe having to go to multiple places to get video. Users, including people on Lemmy, want all of their video entertainment on one platform. They hate multiple subscriptions. They hate having their games in multiple storefronts.
There are user behaviors that enable these bad things to happen. And people need to start ranting about these factors and educating people about how multiple platforms are good, actually. Multiple options for account servers are good, actually. Multiple video hosts are good, actually. Paying creators for content is good.
The solution is not to hack YouTube and put a different front end on their infrastructure.

Technology@lemmy.world•YouTube Premium is getting pricierEnglish
2·8 days agoYou mean front ends to YouTube infrastructure? Or stuff like Loops? One of those two are cool, the other is unsustainable if it were to get popular. Well, maybe both? I guess it depends on how the FOSS infrastructure works about.

22·10 days agoI just tried doing some work on a convention center WiFi connection in a small town. And it was clear the software I was using had no concept of slow internet. No progress bars on downloads, no resuming when connections dropped.
Everything just assumes max performance and fast network.
