From his facial expression and the way he’s staring at her leg, he seems to calculating how many seconds of “accidental” contact with the cigarette it would take for her to notice.

I once found a full pack of cigarettes on the ground at age ~10. I quickly figured out that lighting it on fire and using the cigarette to set off fireworks was so much easier than using a lighter. I didn’t even think of smoking it, I just left it lit on the ground and used it as a lighter.

I didn’t understand why my parents were so worried when they found out lol.

Me too. “It lasts a lot longer and isn’t nearly as dangerous since it isn’t an open flame,” they told me.

They sell punk for this. They look like incense sticks without any scent. Just a smoldering slow burning stick, used to light fireworks with.

I was second-hand smoking two packs a day until I was 13 (when my mom got lung cancer). But back then, every kid I knew was doing the same. Now, seeing people smoking is a relatively rare occurrence.

US, New York state. My county banned smoking indoors before the state did. For a while you would see groups of people outside smoking but now it’s the often just one or two if there’s any. Of course, the smell of weed is everywhere now, so there’s that.

We Americans have many, many faults, but one thing we’ve actually been pretty good about is cutting back on smoking. When I was a kid everyone smoked, and now it’s pretty rare.

I think part of it is actually an unexpected benefit of capitalism. Restaurants and bars used to fight indoor smoking bans tooth and nail because all their cust6were smokers and they didn’t want to lose them. But then when the bans would happen, business actually increased - especially for bars. Turned out lots of people wanted to be able to grab a drink after work but didn’t want to go home smelling like cigarettes.

So now business groups other than big tobacco support the bans, which has resulted in a huge decline of social smoking.

Oh god that must have sucked and sorry about your mom.

Man, to a non-smoker the world must have smelled like ass back then.

My dad was made to quit by my mum in 1973 when they had their first. By my birth in 77 I was really only around smokers at parties or friends houses.

Still didn’t stop me picking up the habit mind you, but I course corrected lol

Where I grew up you could smoke in bars when I was in high-school. Not only was I allowed to go in but the place was also absolutely full of cigarette smoke. Many of those basement bars shut down completely after one caught fire a few years ago. It was a huge scandal

Bars? You little whippersnapper. There was a time when every table had an ashtray. Every table everywhere: restaurants, stores, the checkout line at the gas station, public transportation…

And I am not talking about smoking sections, that came later. I’m talking about people with lit cigarettes being as ubiquitous as people on cellphones today.

Yep they smoke with windows rolled up in the cars, and in the house. Hell it was rare to find someone who didn’t smoke. Then they got all shocked when we all picked up the habit as well when we got old enough to do so.

Luckily for my kids I quit when they were young and yeah I don’t really know anyone who smokes cigarettes anymore.

At least switch to vaping. It’s 95% less harmful, especially if you go with an open mod and not sketchy gas station liquid.

What do you mean it’s less harmful? You’re pulling in smoke of course it will be detrimental for your lung. Saying it’s less harmful is just a blatant example of self-gaslighting

            You’re pulling in smoke

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of the whole process, and your opinion should be discarded as the ignorant rambling it is.

But we don’t really have the long-term data on vaping. While I might concede with vaping being less detrimental to the lungs than smoking, I am still skeptical towards people saying vaping is a lot better. Smoking doesn’t kill you in a short amount of time, but it has existed way longer than vaping, so of course we have the data.

You don’t inhale smoke when vaping unless you’re doing something very wrong. You don’t even inhale vapor.

It’s atomized glycerin, propylene glycol, nicotine, and flavorings (unless you vape unflavored like me).

Would you say having one shot of liquor is less harmful than drinking a bottle? Or no, because you’re still drinking poison, so, clearly gaslighting yourself.

Someone needs to look up the term vaping, which comes from the term vapor, there’s a reason vaping isn’t called smoking. Vaping helped both me and my wife eventually quit smoking and vaping altogether. It was a great stepping stone to getting clean

Technically both, the heating unit is an atomizer which then super heats the liquid mixing it with an air stream to become aerosol vapor

Indeed. Cigarettes can of course have flavours along with snuff products because why does anything need to make sense. The European Union is also trying to bust the balls of our legislators over this, but they just keep saying they’ll do it tomorrow perpetually.

The Dorothy Hamill cut. It was huge after the '76 Olympics:
