Go full 80s.
Switch Turbo: Radical Edition
or the switch U
So much silliness in this thread, I love it.
To be the wet blanket, no, Nintendo did the right thing because they learned their lesson from Wii U, and to a lesser extent from the New 3DS
It’s not about the players, it’s about who buys it, and the ones who buy it are parents and adults who aren’t always up to date on gaming news.
PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5. That makes sense, you want the latest one? Buy the bigger number.
Wii U? I already have a Wii at the house, the kids don’t even use it. It’s a tablet? They already have a tablet though.
New 3DS? I already got a DS and they tricked me into the 3DS! I don’t even need the 3D feature, that was a waste of money. It’s still pretty new, I don’t need another new one.
I worked at GameStop all those releases and I can’t emphasize just HOW MAY TIMES I had those conversations with customers. Not just parents either, but casual consumers.
Xbox was confusing too eventually.
Nobody got confused on Playstation.
Xbox started looking at 14yo’s gamer tags and thought that was a good naming convention:
“XboxoneX”
I’m still not over the fact that not ONE person at Microsoft said “Really? We’re calling it the XBone?”
The Nintendo Switch is a handheld device, so they should have called it Nintendo Switch Advanced
Then there’s MS over here ruining decades of easily understood versioning and thinking that was a Good Move™.
The Nintendo Router
Fun side note, I’ve had more than one fun conversation where someone forgets to say “Nintendo” when asking about connecting a switch to my network (especially back when it was a new thing…)
Probably didn’t because (among, I’m sure, other reasons) the SNES was such a major upgrade over the NES that it would’ve drawn a negative comparison between the lesser difference of the Switch 2 versus the Switch. Younger audiences wouldn’t get it/wouldn’t care, and older audiences would see it as pandering/unwarranted.
Could also be that audiences were still wary of the whole Wii/Wii U debacle and just wanted reassurance that it’d be “more of the same but better”.
And lastly, if they wanted a “Switch 3” in the future, it’s been shown by Xbox that funny naming schemes can go awry after the second iteration.
What you don’t want a switch 64?
Super Switch 64
That’s the next one.
And then the Switch Cube
Switch Wii.
Swiitch

That is unlikely to be the English version, but I like it
Switch Wii U

Wii Switch has different connotations in other communities…
You have to put your keys in the bowl to turn it on

Then the Switch 19(power cable sold separately)
Just realized that was for 64 bit
At the time, most home computers were still 16-bit.
The N64 released in 1996. Mac System 7 released in 1991 with 32-bit support. It took until Windows 95 for the first consumer 32-bit version of Windows.
Nintendo x86
Why not go big and make it a Switch 128?
I understand that there’s a diminishing return and that a 128-bit processor core doesn’t really add much in the way of performance over 64-bit, but it would be like having a V8 under the hood with an obscene amount of horsepower that you never use, no? People drive those anyway.
Or be the true innovators again and release a ternary gaming system 🤯 They could call it the Nintendo3 (pronounced “Nintendo Base Three”), the Nintendo Trit, or the Nintendo ThreeWay
128-bit addressing would add memory and processing overhead that would make it not worth it. 64-bit addressing is already more memory than will ever be in a Nintendo console (16 exabytes, or 16 million TBi).
The Nintendo Swirch 2 also has a 128-bit memory bus, which means it can move up to 128 bits of memory at once. This does make memory operations faster, effective increasing the bandwidth of memory operations.
The PS5 has a memory bus width of 256 bits. The Xbox Series S has 128 bits, and the Series X has 320 bit memory bus width. So, wide buses aren’t uncommon on modern architectures.
That’s just the memory bus though, not the processor core architecture. A 128-bit memory bus can run two 64-bit processor cores simultaneously, but that’s still using a 64-bit instruction set, no?
IMHO, Nintendo slaps “Super” on everything. At this point it’s basically a generic brand element that they use to make things Nintendo-ish.
Mediocre Mario doesn’t have the same kind of ring to it… actually, I take that back. We were robbed!
How about Sub Mario Bothers? Switch Mario Brothers? Vanilla But Kink-Friendly Mario Brothers?
Vanilla But Kink-Friendly Mario Brothers?
I’m feeling a little called out tbh.
Medium Dave Lilywhite sends his regard
It’s Nintendo. They could’ve called it something ridiculous like GIMP and everybody and their mom, kids, and dog would line up like
Unless they slapped a “U” on the end, then no one will line up.
Wow, really misusing that meme format.
Haha I saw that posted a bit ago. Sure it wasn’t a great meme but the meme thread it spawned in the comments got me pretty good
>new<Nintendo Switch
Nintendo Switch U
Nintendo Switch (i)
Oh, that would have been sweet. Then the next Switch would be Switch 64. :D
No, it should have been The Switcheroo
I’m still bummed they didn’t call the N64 any of the following:
Ultra Nintendo
Turbo Nintendo
Super Duper Nintendo
It was originally called the Nintendo Ultra 64:

I think they changed it late in development because they realized there was no “next” name and everyone would have exaggerated any issues with the GameCube being like “Nintendo couldn’t top the Ultra I guess!”
Nintendo when naming their next console:
Yamauchi: “Hey Shigeru, what should we name our next console?”
Miyamoto: “No idea. Anyway, I was thinking about going to the aquarium, you wanna join?”
Yamauchi: “Perfect! We’ll call it the Dolphin!”
Miyamoto: “…What?”
It was most likely because Konami already had a fairly successful publishing house named Ultra Games.
That name was so cool
I mean they could have just stopped after the Ultra 64. The GameCube was alright but there was no point in continuing to invest in Nintendo consoles after that unless you’re just a casual gamer.
I mean the Wii was just an overclocked GameCube with motion controls. The WiiU was just a Wii with a slightly better (yet still outdated) GPU and a worse controller. The Switch 2 is literally just a Switch, again the only difference being that it uses slightly less ancient hardware.
Nintendo gave up completely in innovating after the 90s. Now all they know how to do is cater to the mainstream and sue their most hardcore fans in the name of profit. I’m tired of their Late Stage Capitalism bullshit!
Quite the interesting take that they “stopped innovating”. Sure their hardware specs have always been lack luster, but Satoru Iwata always focused on fun over bleeding edge. After the Wii, PlayStation and Microsoft followed suite with the PS4 “wand” and Xbox Kinect. After the Switch released, Sony created the PS Portal, not to mention the Steam Deck and other copy cats. They have literally been the top innovators of the last few generations.
PSP was way before the switch, but otherwise I fully agree.
ETA: but I guess that was copying GBA so. Nevermind.
PS Portal is not the PSP. It’s a dedicated device that streams games from a PS5.
GB
GBC
GBA
GBA SP
Then the PSP I think showed up around the release of the GBA M and the DS
Nintendo gave up completely in innovating after the 90s.
Very weird take, especially after mentioning:
I mean the Wii was just an overclocked GameCube with motion controls.
PlayStation 3 was just a more powerful PlayStation 2. Xbox 360 was just a more powerful Xbox. Then there is Nintendo who, instead of making a more powerful Gamecube, they went with largely the same hardware but with a radically different control scheme.
Isn’t that the definition of trying to innovate?
Also, the Switch format has everything now. I don’t see how anything can innovate further than to radically change what a videogame even is.

That would require them to be clever. They just keep making the same games over and over.
