Why is this guy such a penis?
Cry harder timmy. You fuckin loser.
Sweeney: AAAAhhhh! Why is Steam so popular and Epic isn’t?! They have AI disclosures and they still dominate us! Why?! How can this be?!
I imagine his head hurting as he just can’t process why his store isn’t number one. In reality, he’s probably just trying to stay in the limelight since any publicity is good publicity for Epic. Today’s currency is attention sad to say.
Billionaire Doesn’t Want You to Make Informed Decisions About Your Purchases - more news at 11
The article states that the AI that is disclosed in steam is about art/voice made by ai that makes it into the final release(stuff that’s easy to notice). Vibe coding does not need to be disclosed.
One thing is for sure. Whatever happens, Tim Sweeney will never stop whining and crying online. It is as if he’s taken on a challenge to take Musk’s throne as the saddest, least funny online personality.

At this rate, all games made in Unreal will automatically need AI disclosures.
true
I don’t think that everyone uses Ai, even with Unreal. Unless there are features that has to be used and are basically Ai components.
Tim Sweeney owns the Unreal engine, so I think their point was that Unreal itself is going to be so AI slop-coded that games made on it will need disclosures because they came out of the Unreal bucket.
Ah, I see. Well I didn’t think of that one. Yeah, that’s a valid point. If the Engine itself is vibe slopped, well then the game developed with the Engine is basically Ai assisted / partially generated.
Anyone who has Epic Games software installed on their personal device is an absolute moron at this point.
There’s a real economic cost to [blah blah crybaby way of saying AI disclosures]
Yes. There is. Because informed consumers vote with their wallets. As it should be. Moron.
I notice slopcoders often maintain that “slop code is just as good as code written by humans- in fact it is better!” while also refusing to clearly label their output as slop.
The Epic Store has always been anti-consumer so it’s no surprise he defends that kind of practice.
Every 10th item on rhe epic store is soft core FMV fantasy girlfriend porn.
I’m not sure what your point is because Steam is absolutely flooded with porn games, especially since the rise of genAI.
It’s not about availability, it’s about marketing. I don’t stumble across porn games on steam, but I regularly do on Epic.
You have to opt to see NSFW stuff on steam.
That explains it. It also means there is a simple solution that Epic should also implement.
Really? They’re all over my Steam front page. And I’ve never bought a single one.
Do you have adult games toggled off in Steam settings? That may be why you never see them.
Well I’ve never looked for Adult stuff on steam, so maybe I’ve never toggeled it on.
It gives consumers free games and takes a smaller cut from the developers than steam. All corporations have mutually exclusive interests with the consumer tho.
So do developers on Steam, you literally have a filter for free games. While also having user reviews, forums, a sane refund policy, regional pricing, curators, funding Linux driver development, as well as a shopping cart (though I heard Epic Store finally put enough braincells together to get that one too).
They do that to try to gain marketshare. They should try to just stop being shitty instead and improve their client. And get off Xitter.
They do that to try to gain marketshare.
This is every single action any entity which exists to extract profit from you that isn’t immediately increasing revenue or decreasing expenses/wages.
They should try to just stop being shitty
Once again, this is done to gain marketshare
It’s weird as fuck to see people with loyalty to one corporation or another.
Sue. My point is they’re not doing it out of the good of their heart. They’re doing it in lieu of actually making it a good platform to buy from.
No corporation has ever done anything out of the good of its heart because they do not have hearts, you are still treating them like people instead of entities that exist exclusively to extract money from you while giving as little money to its workers as possible.
They’re doing it in lieu of actually making it a good platform to buy from.
Nah, giving the workers more money and me free games does more to make a platform viable than features. But doing shit everyone hates like filling your store with slop games that can’t be identified until you’ve already paid is a dumb decision.
You’re an idiot that only cares about getting free stuff. You are arguing against people having “loyalty to one corporation or another” while endlessly defending the objectively worse company simply because you like to get free games…
It gives consumers free games
Wow, amazing. Nevermind that most those giveaways are on sales for peanuts anyway. And you get them on garbage launcher.
and takes a smaller cut from the developers than steam.
Great, they take smaller cut. At a low, low cost of being a black hole of exposure. But hey! They do take a smaller cut from the two copies you do sell.
Lol, they offer competition, take less money but apparently they might as well not bother
Step 1 of the enshittification timeline, yes.
At this point he has whined about it so much that everyone’s going to know the game uses AI, even if they don’t disclose it. He would have genuinely being better off shutting up about it.
No one gives a shit what he thinks.
Age ratings tell parents what’s in a game so they can make informed decisions for their kids. These AI statements are just as partisan as mandatory political essays or forcing developers to list their voting history to drive cancel campaigns and public struggle sessions.
Absolutely fuck this fucking guy.
Honestly, could we have those too? I would love to have that.
Capitalists - consumers guide the market by making informed ethical purchasing decisions.
Also capitalists - labeling requirements? Absolutely not.
I might be from that stain but I am knot a capitalist to my guillotinism.
It’s a great “better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool than to talk and remove all doubt” moment. He can’t help himself, it’s like the more power and money someone has, the more time they have to imagine how they’re victims.
But I like to know who is an awful person so I can avoid them, so thanks Tim.
I figured that many people are sad and lonely, ultra rich people too but they usually also are low empathy ones so that’s why they are lonely (and thus sad). Money just helps them force their thoughts down other peoples throats without effort.
Since when the fuck has AI been partisian? It sounds like he’s trying to make it partisian. In reality, everyone hates the data centers. The only thing that’s partisan-adjacent is that the Trump administration (Trump specifically) loves it, but that’s just because he’s a boomer and boomers, for some reason I do not yet understand, tend to like the shitty photo/video generative AI more than others.
People like this have two reasons to make it partisan:
- It’s a way for them to stay delusionally self-victimized since “AI would be a total success if it weren’t for that group of haters” and it’s convenient to make the haters the political out-group, since typically these people already view themselves as tragically oppressed politically (while somehow having all of the power and being the only oppressors themselves).
- If they succeed in making it partisan, that means they gain about 30% of the population as supporters via political team sports, versus 90% bipartisan hate right now.
The only reason Trump loves it is because it’s propping up our entire economy.
AI companies are also paying for tons of political advertising, and republicans are using it most to create their ads too.
Boomers like AI because they’re mostly fash. And the fash LOVE AI.
As aggravating as this might be to hear, there is at least one state where workers unions have been pro-datacenter under the belief that the work to build them will at least bring them some contracting/construction jobs. Some states are destitute enough to accept anything, even if it’s only a short-term bandaid for their economic troubles.
Just as partisan as these things I have made up in my head!
What a crybaby.
Isn’t the entire Unreal Engine just AI slop at this point? Like the engine itself is now vibe coded?
Kinda the same with the new Unity? Might not be vibe coded itself, but they just redesigned it specifically so LLM agents can be plugged into it, right?
I mean to be honest every engine is going to be like that now at least partly.
I do kind of hope valve update their AI policy at some point to actually clarify what the label means. Both open source and closed source engines are vulnerable to AI code so unless you also build the engine your game might include AI code without your knowledge. So who’s responsibility is it at that point to check the little box in the store to say this game includes code made by AI?
I mean to be honest every engine is going to be like that now at least partly.
If that is so then disclosing the fact will carry little if any stigma.
However I don’t see why you would suppose that any amount of slop code being published might make (for example) the Quake engine become slop.
I’ll say that on youtube, the implementation has been problematic.
There’s a channel where the creator has used a speech synthesis for long before the modern crop of AI text to speech. He still uses the same old speech synthesis, not even one of the newer models, but flagged as ‘AI’.
Conversely, blatant slop appears with zero indication. With no option to report as AI slop.
But the point is that if someone used an LLM to do some code completion, technically AI but I don’t think anyone would consider something like ‘multiply all members of this array by this other array’ to be ‘slop’ when turned into what an LLM would turn it into. There’s some point where it’s lost the plot entirely, but it is going to be relatively unlikely that folks ever give up the ‘still micromanaging, but letting an LLM bake in the very specific syntax needed’ level of AI.
On the other hand, we have people turning a total lack of idea into big, time-consuming content that requires a minute to figure out how hollow it is. It’s a continuation of what I’ll retroactively call ‘asset-slop’ where people just tossed in a bunch of existing assets, but harder to tell at a glance. Saw an ad recently for Perplexity, saying you can just ask Perplexity to make video slop and post to youtube with zero effort and make $10k/month, brazen in the worst of the worst of the AI users.
All that said, Sweeney is pretty firmly in the ‘let the slop flow’ end of the AI spectrum, so screw him.
I’m not quite sure I understand what your point is.
Almost all modern game engines will potentially have AI code in. Most of them are either be managed by a company like blizzard or unity. The rest are open source projects like Godot.
every engine is going to be like that now at least partly.
…
all modern game engines will potentially have AI code in.
I think you might have understood me better than you let on. Or a strong wind blew the goal posts just enough to accommodate the word “modern” where they first stood.
Time will tell whether, in the future, all modern Scotsmen will eat slop with their porridge. At present there are still many extant Scotsmen who do not.
whats the problem with AI disclosures, its useful to know that a game uses AI(if the game opts in to put it,cause rarely i see games that use AI and dont put the disclosure idk if its policy)
It’s unenforceable. Those participating draw targets on their backs with no incentive to do so. Therefore it’s not effective.
People still do it when the slop is unmistakable because they know they can’t get away with being that lazy. I think that’s kinda funny.
Sweeney pretending this is about indie developers is hilarious.
A common big business tactic is “small business”-washing the anti-regulatory actions. I asked a few right-libertarians on what regulations stop someone to make the Windows killer, only one didn’t block me, instead he came up with hypotheticals about a group of people working for free for someone until they get a working prototype, and said maybe there’s one regulation that is so obscure he couldn’t find in a few hours of googling(!).
