Of course not. The biggest mistake is believing that “democratic” institutions can somehow regulate economically powerful people.

The system is working exactly as it’s supposed to : the bourgeoisie is above the law.

The second sentence is absolutely true, but we made our biggest mistake way before that. Not hanging every confederate after the war was probably it. But I’m sure there are historians that could argue for something earlier.

It’s a long series of mistakes. Not finishing off the Confederacy, not putting Nixon in prison for Watergate and sabotaging peace talks with the Vietcong, not putting Reagan in prison for sabotaging negotiations during the Iran Hostage Crisis. They’ve been crooks for a century and there’s only one solution.

There was a brief but glorious period after Trump lost reelection at the end of his first term where all the social media sites finally started cracking down on the entire alt-right. Automated misinformation detectors went up, agitators and openly racist accounts (including Trump) were banned, and things almost started to look like they might get better for once.

The moment Trump started polling well in the last election, they reversed course real quick. All those programs were shut down and the worst people in the world got their accounts unbanned just in time for the 2024 election.

It wasn’t a very glorious time for those of us who were screaming and banging our heads on the walls, pleading, begging, demanding that the government, state, local, whoever would actually prosecute the guy who had just attempted to violently overthrow democracy.

I actually smashed my car radio with my foot while sitting at a stop light when I heard an NPR report on Hitler II’s “humiliating end” via the kid glove treatment.

I’m a queer, trans person married to a first generation Latina with a disabled child. What exactly do you think my family did to deserve this? Voted in every election I’ve been eligible to for years, protested whenever I can, I donate to food banks and bail funds, donate to people in other countries in need, trained myself with self defense, shit, I even lost a DAMNED good job by standing up for my rights and got blacklisted from my last industry, live in fucking fear of my passport getting revoked because I’ve got the “wrong” marker for my gender and I DARE to use the toilet in public. I cannot apply for asylum from quite a few countries and even if I could then not without giving up my home, MY home, my family, my friends, my community. Fun fact, most countries won’t touch a queer asylum case from the US with a ten foot pole.

What, EXACTLY, did I do to deserve this? What did my DISABLED CHILD do to deserve this? What, pray tell, did my community, my immigrant in-laws, DO to deserve what’s going on right now?

Or are you just saying a country of over 300 million people with literally millions facing down oppression and fascism that we just deserve to get murdered in the street?

the 19th century people in Europe were in the same situation. They managed to protest, riot and eventually change things. They also had to work, had families, faced violent law enforcement. We’ve been enjoying the results of their bravery for over a century now. Americans only have excuses and believe bravery is shooting someone who can’t fight back.

It’s not just not-easy. It’s not financially or logistically feasible for most of us. And then what would we hope to accomplish without resorting to armed violence? I’d rather lay down and die than take another person’s life, no matter what they did to earn it. You say I did absolutely nothing, but only because I didn’t start shooting people. What I did was resolve to not let these nazis change me and my morals, to continue fighting ideologically, making the world better through my actions, and refusing to accept any justification for taking up the enemy’s toxic weapons.

The difference is we don’t make excuses for our history. We don’t go to court to make sure our schools hide it. We don’t call historical fact “anti-Canadian” because it makes us uncomfortable. We don’t mistake national mythology for patriotism.

Canada has blood on its hands. We know. We teach it. We argue about it in public. We dig up the graves.

And if fascism comes for us, our highest political principle will not be keeping ourselves comfortable while somebody else pays the price. We have guns, and ours aren’t just for show.

Canada is still a genocidal settler-colony that runs on imperialism. The capitalist system conceding that Canada has a bloody past does not excuse the bloody present.

President Camacho found the smartest guy on the planet and listened to him despite Not Sure having a peanut size head. The world around Camacho improved and he had charisma. He left office when things were on an upturn and burrito coverings were doing better. Camacho was the kind of leader people would watch fuck. There would be an epidemic of hysterical blindness and riots if the sitting and shitting president got on TV and fucked. The difference between President Camacho and the other one is night and day. One has brown skin and white underpants. The other one has white skin and brown underpants.

Brought to you by Carl’s Jr. Fuck you I’m eating.
